Google has rolled out an update to its Photos app, allowing users to upgrade their standard photos to Ultra HDR images after they’ve been taken. This change brings more colorful and brighter photos to all users.
The update, available in version 7.24.0.747539053, allows users to access the Ultra HDR option under the Adjust section of the photo editor. A slider is used to adjust the effect, similar to other editing tools.
While this upgrade may not significantly impact file size, it’s achieved through a smaller “gain map” that holds luminosity details, enabling devices to produce high dynamic range visuals without storing full-resolution HDR images.
For average users, this feature should be noticeable on supported displays and services. If the rollout goes smoothly, all Photos users can expect to have access to Ultra HDR soon.
