Google has released its latest affordable phone, the Pixel 9a, with several design updates that aim to make it feel more like a premium device within the A-series line. According to Soniya Jobanputra, a product management director, the team’s goal was to create a device that feels like a cousin to Google’s high-end phones while maintaining its playful and approachable personality.
One notable change is the removal of the Pixel Camera Bar, which has been replaced by a nearly flat back design. This update prioritizes simplicity and ease of use, making it easier to slip into a pocket or sit flatly on a surface. The camera bump has also been reduced in size, resulting in a shallower appearance.
In addition to these aesthetic changes, the Pixel 9a features an improved display with a brighter pOLED panel, boasting a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and enhanced power efficiency. This upgrade not only delivers smoother visuals but also allows for a more efficient use of internal space.
The phone is available in a new color option called Iris, inspired by the “Purple-ish” hue from Pixel 3a. According to Jess Ng, design manager at Google CMF, Iris feels calm yet confident and offers versatility in both functionality and aesthetics. The new case design also allows users to enjoy the color on both the inside and outside of the phone.
With its advanced camera system, including a 48MP main camera and 13MP ultrawide lens, the Pixel 9a is set to provide an exceptional camera experience at its price point.
