Google has introduced a new camera feature called Connected Cameras, exclusively available on the Pixel 9 series smartphones. This feature allows users to wirelessly connect an external camera to their device and stream video from multiple angles while using popular social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok.
To use Connected Cameras, users can launch the Pixel Tips app, tap on “Use another Pixel’s camera,” and follow a step-by-step tutorial. Alternatively, they can search for “connected” in their phone’s settings and toggle on the feature. Once enabled, the camera picker appears on the screen whenever streaming video with a compatible app.
However, users should be aware of some limitations. Switching between cameras is slow, taking three seconds to switch from one camera to another. The remote device can only share either the rear or front camera lens, and switching between multiple remote devices is painful due to compatibility issues.
The feature also has potential drawbacks. Automatic audio recording switching may not always be desirable in certain situations, such as when recording voiceovers. Additionally, without proper security measures, Connected Cameras may enable covert recording on social media platforms.
For now, users can only pair a single remote camera at a time, but Google plans to improve this feature with future updates. As of March 2025, the Pixel Drop is available for download in various regions, although some features may not be immediately available due to regional restrictions.
