Google Releases Android 16 Developer Preview 2 with Backend Tweaks and Minor Features

Google has released its second developer preview of Android 16, building on the first one that arrived in November. The latest version, code-named DP2, focuses on backend tweaks to enhance the app experience, improve battery life, and boost performance while minimizing incompatibilities.

Key features of Android 16 DP2 include:

* New controls over device haptics through haptic APIs
* Search within cloud media providers using the photo picker
* A new activity intensity data type in Health Connect for tracking activities

While these changes may not be immediately noticeable, they demonstrate Google’s ongoing efforts to refine the platform. The company is recommending that developers take advantage of this preview to prepare their apps for the final release.

For users, the update will be available as an over-the-air download if you were already running Android 16 DP1. Otherwise, factory images can be flashed to your Pixel device using the link provided below.

The latest build information includes:

* Release date: December 18, 2024
* Build number: BP21.241121.009
* Emulator support: x86 (64-bit), ARM (v8-A)
* Security patch level: December 2024
* Google Play services version: 24.46.30

A full release of Android 16 is expected in 2025, with a beta version likely to be released soon after.
