Google has announced plans to replace its Google Assistant virtual assistant with Gemini. The update will roll out to most devices, excluding those with Android 9 or earlier, as well as some other devices.
The change affects mobile phones, tablets, cars, and devices connected to phones, such as headphones and watches, and even some TV-connected devices. This decision comes as no surprise, given that Google initially planned to integrate Gemini’s features into Google Assistant when Bard was launched.
Starting later this year, the classic Google Assistant will be removed from most mobile devices and new downloads on mobile app stores. Meanwhile, Android phones with 2GB of RAM or more running Android 10 and up will receive the Gemini mobile app.
Google is also upgrading tablets, cars, and home devices to Gemini, bringing a new “experience” to speakers, displays, and TVs. However, some devices meet specific requirements, including Android phones and tablets with at least 2GB of RAM and running Android 10 or later.
