Google Revives Smart Glasses with New Android XR Partnership

Google co-founder Sergey Brin acknowledged his past mistakes in the failed 2013 launch of Google Glass, but expressed confidence that this time will be different. The company announced new partnerships for its “Android XR” headset operating system at the annual Google I/O developer conference.

In an impromptu fireside chat, Brin said he has learned from previous errors and attributes the failure of Google Glass to a “technology gap.” Since 2013, Google has developed advanced AI technology that powers Gemini, its flagship AI product. This expertise will enable the new smart glasses to provide more practical assistance without distractions.

Warby Parker is one of the companies partnering with Google for Android XR, and their collaboration aims to launch a series of smart glasses next year. The glasses will be built on top of Google’s Android XR and feature Gemini AI assistant integration. Apple and Meta are also working on similar smart glasses projects, which use augmented reality.

Google has partnered with various developers and device makers, including Samsung, Qualcomm, Sony, Xreal, and Magic Leap, to support the Android XR ecosystem. The company’s annual developer conference featured updates to its AI products, including a new high-end subscription service called Google AI Ultra.
