Google Takes Aim at Microsoft’s AI Strategy

Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently fired a shot at Microsoft during an interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin, stating that his company’s AI models are competitive. However, experts say that Microsoft’s product is the real issue.

Microsoft has partnered with OpenAI to jumpstart its generative AI efforts, but this partnership may be risky for the company. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman was recently fired and reinstated, and the company is now trying to shift from a nonprofit structure to become a for-profit corporation while dealing with talent loss and a lawsuit with co-founder Elon Musk.

The problem isn’t Microsoft’s AI capabilities, but rather its reliance on OpenAI’s technology. Google, on the other hand, has developed competitive models without relying on someone else’s work. However, its biggest challenge lies in creating compelling products that won’t disrupt its search business.

Unlike Bing, which is not a significant enough business for Microsoft to worry about, Google’s Gemini AI product hasn’t been successfully scaled into a consumer-facing offering that doesn’t harm its core search business. Until Google addresses this issue, the competition’s reliance on external models becomes irrelevant.
