Google is teaming up with Samsung to bring a desktop mode to Android, building on the foundation of Samsung’s DeX platform. The feature, codenamed as Android 16, aims to enhance windowing capabilities, allowing users to seamlessly switch between mobile and computer-like interfaces.
Samsung first introduced DeX in 2017, which adjusts phone settings and apps when connected to a larger display, making it possible to use the device like a desktop. Google’s Android 16 will introduce similar features, including adaptive apps that can move and stretch across screens. The update also supports foldables, tablets, Chromebooks, mixed reality wearables, and even cars.
Google shared more details on the upcoming feature in a blog post, emphasizing its adaptiveness to work on various devices. A demo during the presentation showcased the new layout, with apps centered in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. The time sits at the top-left corner, along with Wi-Fi signal and battery information on the right.
