Google Tightly Controls Free AI Access After Launch

Google’s free users are facing significant changes to their ability to use the company’s latest AI tools, including Gemini 3 Pro and Nano Banana Pro image generator. The new limits, which include “Basic access” with unpredictable daily prompts, come as the company struggles to manage high demand.

The changes affect not just Gemini but also Nano Banana, with its image generation limit reduced to two images per day. NotebookLM, which recently gained features for auto-generating infographics and slide decks, has been temporarily pulled from free users due to capacity issues.

Google claims that these limitations are necessary due to “supply and demand” breaking the system. However, experts say it’s a classic case of companies realizing that giving away powerful AI models for free is expensive and resource-heavy.

As Google continues to build more servers, they aim to stabilize services and bring back full features to NotebookLM. Nevertheless, the direction of travel is clear: as these AI models improve and become more popular, the “free” tier will likely continue to shrink, nudging power users toward paid subscriptions for guaranteed access.
