Google to Add AI Apps to Phones, Samsung in Talks

Google’s upcoming smartphones will feature artificial intelligence (AI) apps, including those from Perplexity AI and Microsoft. This was revealed by Peter Fitzgerald, vice president of platforms and device partnerships at Google, during a court testimony supporting the company’s claims that there are options available to customers.

Fitzgerald shared this information while testifying in the Justice Department’s antitrust case against Google. He stated that Google sent letters to phone manufacturers and US wireless carriers last week, clarifying that its contracts don’t prevent them from installing other companies’ voice assistants or generative AI apps.

Samsung is also reportedly in talks to add several AI apps to its phones. Fitzgerald mentioned this during his testimony. The changes proposed by the Justice Department include forcing Google to sell its Chrome browser and license search data to competitors, as well as stopping payments to other companies for making their products primary choices on devices and services.

Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas has spoken out against the proposed structural remedies, stating that divesting Chrome from Google would lead to a hit in quality and business model. Other browsers like Microsoft Edge and Perplexity’s upcoming Comet browser can already use Chromium as an open-source platform.

Meanwhile, General Motors is having “very productive” conversations with the Trump administration regarding new 25% automotive tariffs, according to CEO Mary Barra. The automaker believes that aligning with the president’s goal of a strong manufacturing sector in the country will benefit both parties.

Barra emphasized the need for clarity and consistency in public policies to help GM make decisions. She also acknowledged competition from Chinese automakers but stated that a level playing field is necessary for fair trade. Barra remains confident that consumers will eventually prefer electric vehicles (EVs) due to advancements in charging infrastructure, including partnerships with companies like Tesla.

As GM navigates industry shifts, Barra prioritizes the company’s mission of creating a world with zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion. The CEO believes that with the right infrastructure, EVs will become the consumers’ choice over gas-powered vehicles.
