Google is implementing new security measures by requiring Android developers distributing apps outside the Play Store to verify their identities. Starting in September next year, certified Android devices will need to install apps from verified developers in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The requirement will roll out globally in 2027.
To comply, developers will need to provide personal details such as name, address, email, phone number, and may upload an official government ID. This new policy aims to prevent users from falling victim to malware and scams by making it harder for malicious developers to disguise themselves.
The update targets commercial developers, but Google says it’s committed to keeping Android open for student and hobbyist developers. A separate developer console will be created to facilitate the verification process, with restrictions on app and install numbers.
Google is inviting developers to sign up for early access to provide feedback on the new rules, which could lead to changes before their implementation. This move aims to enhance Android’s security while preserving its open environment.
