Google has finally cleared regulatory hurdles to activate its Loss of Pulse Detection feature on the Pixel Watch 3. The feature, which uses advanced heart rate sensors, can detect impending death due to a stopped heart and was previously restricted in the US. The FDA’s approval paves the way for the watch to be sold in more countries, including Austria, Belgium, and Ireland.
The Pixel Watch 3’s Loss of Pulse Detection works by analyzing heart rate data at an unprecedented frequency of once per second. When no pulse is detected, the watch quickly locks in a second, providing fast security features but potentially causing inconvenience when adjusting the watch on the wrist.
This feature joins other health monitoring capabilities like EKG readings, which have become standard on many smartwatches. Google’s innovation aims to provide enhanced functionality on consumer wearables, further solidifying its position in the market.
