Google Unveils AI Edge Gallery for Offline AI Model Runs

Google has released a new app called Google AI Edge Gallery, allowing users to run various AI models from the Hugging Face platform on their phones without an internet connection. The app is currently available for Android and will soon come to iOS.

With Google AI Edge Gallery, users can find, download, and run compatible models that generate images, answer questions, write code, and more. These models run offline, using the phone’s processor, rather than relying on cloud-based computations. This can be particularly appealing to users who are concerned about sending sensitive data or want to have models available without an internet connection.

The app features a home screen with shortcuts to AI tasks and capabilities, such as “Ask Image” and “AI Chat.” Users can tap on these capabilities to access a list of suitable models, including Google’s Gemma 3n. The app also includes a “Prompt Lab” for single-turn tasks powered by models, which comes with task templates and configurable settings.

Google notes that performance may vary depending on the device’s hardware and model size. Larger models will take longer to complete tasks compared to smaller ones.

The app is available for download from GitHub and is under an Apache 2.0 license, making it suitable for use in most contexts without restrictions. Google invites developers to provide feedback on the Google AI Edge Gallery experience.
