Google Unveils Android 16 with Fresh Material Design Look

Google’s latest update, Android 16, brings significant changes not just in features but also in its Material Design language. Dubbed “Material 3 Expressive,” this new design aims to bring a fresh look to the company’s popular apps, including Calendar, Photos, Files, and Meet.

The Phone by Google app has given us an early glimpse into what’s to come with Android 16. An APK teardown revealed changes in the incoming call screen, in-call menu, and even the “More” menu. The most notable change is the use of a rounded call button, which retains its vertical swipe gesture for easy answering or declining calls.

The in-call screen now boasts larger visuals and an animation for the caller’s profile picture, although it disappears when receiving a call. In-call buttons have shifted from round to oval shapes, with some displaying a pill shape upon pressing. The “More” menu has also been revamped, moving additional controls into a pop-up style menu.

While these changes are currently in internal testing and not available for general users, we can expect them to roll out before the Feature Drop later this year. This update marks an exciting shift back towards Android updates, bringing design consistency across the operating system’s apps.
