Google Unveils Android XR Augmented Reality Glasses

Google has released a new prototype for its augmented reality glasses, dubbed Android XR. The device features a thick-framed design with a large pod above the wearer’s right eye, housing the electronics.

During an I/O event, Google showcased Android XR’s capabilities, including a built-in camera and Gemini AI, which can provide information on demand. The AI was tested in various scenarios, from identifying artwork to providing directions.

Android XR also supports augmented- and virtual-reality headsets, including Samsung’s Project Moohan. However, the headset itself is bulky and heavy.

Industry analyst Avi Greengart notes that consumers have become accustomed to cameras and interactive technology, making smart glasses a viable market opportunity. Google’s partnership with firms like Gentle Monster and Warby Parker aims to bring affordable, consumer-friendly smart glasses to the market.

The release of Android XR marks a shift towards more accessible augmented reality technology, following Google’s previous forays into the field. The company has learned from its past mistakes and is teaming up with established players to create successful products.
