Google has been working on its Android XR platform for smart glasses and mixed reality headsets, and the tech giant recently offered a live demo at the TED2025 conference. The demo showcased the capabilities of Android XR in action on a pair of prototype smart glasses. Unlike previous demos, this one provided a more authentic look at what the software can do.
During the conference, Google’s Shahram Izadi led a talk that demonstrated Android XR’s features, including the ability to display prescription lenses and connect to your phone. The demo showed how Gemini, an AI-powered app within Android XR, could generate haikus on demand, recognize records, and translate text into multiple languages.
The Android XR platform also enables more advanced demos, such as using Google Maps Immersive View while playing games like Stardew Valley. The tech giant has been teasing this functionality under the codename Project Astra, which is now available as part of Gemini Live on smartphones.
A prototype version of the smart glasses used in the demo was said to be a precursor to a product that Samsung plans to release later this year. With Android XR, Google aims to revolutionize the way we interact with technology, making it more accessible and intuitive for everyday users.
