Google Unveils ‘Expressive’ Material 3 Design

Google has introduced the latest update to its Material Design system, dubbed Material 3 Expressive, which aims to create more “emotional” and interactive interfaces. The new design language builds on the success of previous updates, including the 2021 Material Design 3 (also known as Material You), but takes a bolder approach.

User testing revealed that people preferred “wild and playful” designs, which inspired Google’s design team to expand its use of color, shape, and animation. The update includes new physics-informed motion systems for interactions, an expanded shape library with morphing animations, and increased typography and color palette options.

The goal is not to make every interaction playful but rather to create a wider range of emotional connections with users. Tests showed that participants were able to spot key interface elements up to four times faster in the new design compared to previous versions.

Material 3 Expressive is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to evolve its Material Design system, which has become an industry standard for Android and Wear OS designs. The update signals a shift towards more expressive and personalized interfaces, rather than a rejection of clean minimalism.

Google’s design vice-president Vanessa Cho sees the new design language as a progression that builds on people’s familiarity with digital interfaces, rather than a battle between minimalism and maximalism. With the latest update, Google is pushing the boundaries of what user experience (UX) can express, creating more dynamic and engaging interfaces for its users.
