Google Unveils Open-Source Spatial Audio Format, Eclipsa Audio

Google has introduced Eclipsa Audio, an open-source spatial audio format designed for everyone, not just professionals in the entertainment industry. Developed by Google and Samsung with support from other key contributors, Eclipsa Audio is based on Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF) and released under a royalty-free license.

The Open Audio team at Google explains that spatial audio technologies have been around for over 50 years, but creating them has been limited to professionals. However, with Eclipsa Audio, anyone can create spatial audio files using freely available audio tools.

Google plans to release a free plugin for AVID Pro Tools Digital Audio Workstation in the spring and is also providing an open source reference renderer for standalone playback. Additionally, YouTube will allow creators to upload videos with Eclipsa Audio tracks, and native support will arrive on Chrome this year.

Eclipsa Audio will also be supported by Samsung’s 2025 TV lineup and Android AOSP release later in the year. Furthermore, TVs and soundbars from multiple manufacturers are expected to receive support in 2025. To ensure quality assurance, Samsung and Google are launching a certification program for manufacturers and consumers who use Eclipsa Audio-enabled products.
