Google has introduced a new feature in its upcoming Android 16 operating system that allows users to unlock their devices without turning on the display first. The “screen-off fingerprint unlock” feature is currently available only for the Pixel 9 series, but it could be exclusive to these devices due to the presence of an ultrasonic scanner.
When enabled, users can place their finger on the device’s screen when it’s turned off to unlock it. The device will then briefly display a confirmation message before opening the app or home screen that was last used. To use this feature, users must place their fingerprint in the area of the lock screen’s in-display fingerprint scanner.
The Android 16 Developer Preview 2 also brings enhancements to battery life and performance, including improved adaptive refresh rates and reworked background tasks. The next major OS version is expected to arrive in Q2 2025 and may start beta testing as early as January.
This new feature is part of Google’s efforts to streamline its biometric credentials for the lock screen. With Android 16, users can expect a range of improvements and new features that will enhance their device experience.
