Google Updates Deepfakes Search Controls and Expands “About This Image” Feature

Google updates deepfakes search algorithms and controls and expands About this image to Circle to Search and Google Lens.

Google has updated its search ranking system for queries where there’s a higher risk of explicit fake content appearing. This includes making it easier to remove deepfakes from search results. The company is also improving the way it differentiates between real and consensual explicit content, such as actor nude scenes, versus deepfakes.

To do this, Google uses patterns to detect sites that have been removed for fake imagery. It then demotes those sites in search rankings. Additionally, when someone successfully removes an image from search results, Google will also remove any duplicates of that image it has in its index.

The About this image feature is expanding to Circle to Search and Google Lens. This feature provides context on images, including where they were first indexed by Google, where else you can see the image, and how other sites use and describe it. It also includes metadata about the image, such as who created it, and whether it was generated using AI.

About this image is available in 40 languages globally and is rolling out now on Circle to Search on select Android devices and Google Lens.
