Google is warning its users that 61% of email accounts have been targeted by cyber attacks, with AI playing a major role. The company advises switching from old sign-in methods like passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA) to passkeys and social sign-ins. Passkeys use biometric authentication via trusted devices like smartphones, making them “phishing resistant”.
According to Google, using automated account security tools is crucial in protecting against scams. The company sees passkeys as a more secure alternative to passwords, allowing users to log in easily with the method they use to unlock their devices.
Interestingly, younger users are adopting passkeys and social sign-ins, while older generations continue using traditional methods. For instance, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri recently shared an experience where he narrowly escaped a phishing attack that used real-looking “secure Google domains”.
Google urges its users to switch from passwords to passkeys for enhanced security.
