Google has announced that its new spatial audio format, Eclipsa Audio, will be coming to Android devices. The royalty-free alternative to Dolby Atmos is set to be integrated into the upcoming AOSP release of Android 16. This means Android users can expect improved audio quality in their mobile devices.
Eclipsa Audio’s benefits lie in its ability for creators and device makers to use it without additional charges, making it an attractive option for those looking for cost-effective solutions. Google plans to release a free Eclipsa Audio plugin for AVID Pro Tools Digital Audio Workstation this spring.
For Android developers, the new format brings a range of benefits, including easier decoding and playback using the media3-decoder-iamf module. Additionally, the Chrome web browser will support Eclipsa Audio, although it’s unclear whether desktop or mobile devices will be supported.
Samsung has already started supporting Eclipsa Audio in its latest TVs and soundbars, with several models announced at CES 2025, including Crystal UHD TVs, QLED TVs, and OLED TVs. The company’s support for the format is a significant endorsement of Eclipsa Audio’s potential.
