Google has announced that “Live Notifications” will be a new feature in Android 16, allowing users to monitor ongoing activities from various apps. The first piece of this functionality is similar to existing notifications, showing progress in the notification tray. However, the second part uses a chip in the status bar to display larger, separate notifications.
Tapping on the chip reveals these notifications, which are pushed to the top of the tray and show up differently on the always-on display lock screen. Users can turn off Live Notifications for specific apps. This feature is similar to Samsung’s “Live Notifications” introduced in One UI 7 on the Galaxy S25 series.
A demo app created by developer Viktor Mykhaliv showcases how this feature will work, demonstrating its potential as a convenient new notification system. Android 16’s final release is expected around May/June, with the beta program ongoing for Pixel devices.
