A new app called “SafetyCore” has been installed on Android devices as part of the recent Google System Updates, causing concern among users. However, after digging deeper, it appears that this app is designed to enhance user safety with features coming to Google Messages for Android.
In November 2024, Google started rolling out “SafetyCore” alongside the “Android System Key Verifier” app. The new service will process messages on-device and maintain end-to-end encryption, providing a protection feature against sensitive content. This includes blurring images that may contain nudity as part of an optional “Sensitive Content Warnings” feature.
When enabled, this feature prompts users with a speed bump containing help-finding resources and options to view the content. Google is also working on a new “contact verifying feature” using QR codes, which will launch in 2025.
While some users may be concerned about the installation of these apps, they come directly from Google and are designed to further enhance user safety. The rollout has taken place over several months, but it’s now clear that there is nothing to worry about.
