Google has introduced ‘Live Updates’ in its Android 16 beta, bringing dynamic and real-time information to users’ lock screens and status bars. This feature is similar to Apple’s Live Activities but with additional features such as dynamic progress bars and status updates.
Users can see the order status, including “Order is being cooked” or “Order is on the way,” along with a progress bar that changes as the activity progresses. The feature includes small icons for added clarity, like a cooking pot or bike.
Live Updates appear prominently on the lock screen and above other notifications but users have control over which apps use the feature via a Settings toggle. Android 16 beta includes major tablet improvements and Google’s take on Apple’s Live Activities is one of its main attractions.
The new ‘progress-centric’ notification system will be built into the operating system, taking up space on the lock screen and setting it apart from other notifications. With the full rollout expected in Q2 this year, users can expect to see more features like these in the coming months.
