The UK government has introduced new rules classifying crumpets, porridge oats, and other high-energy foods with low added nutrients as “junk food” under its nutrient profiling model. The system aims to tackle childhood obesity by banning ads for specified bad foods before 9pm.
Nutritionist Rob Hobson argues that while some of the inclusions on the list may seem harmless, any efforts to combat childhood obesity are welcome. However, he warns that caveats will be needed as the proposals come into effect next year.
Hobson says crumpets, made from similar ingredients as bread, generally have low levels of added sugar and salt. Plain porridge oats are considered a healthy food option, but instant porridges loaded with golden syrup and added sugars should be avoided.
Other foods on the list include mueslis, granolas, frozen yogurt, protein shakes, and pitta bread snacks. Hobson advises parents to opt for healthier alternatives like oatmeal made with milk and fresh fruit or whole grain crackers instead of refined snacks.
