The Biden administration’s push for government efficiency has led to a shocking move – laying off a team formed by the Obama era to modernize the government with software. The General Services Administration (GSA) cut ties with roughly 90 federal technologists, who were tasked with implementing technology to improve other agencies.
Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency had previously hinted at the group’s demise when he wrote on X that 18F “has been deleted”. Employees received termination letters stating their positions were being abolished due to an agency reduction-in-force. Some workers faced a double whammy, having been fired in February and then rehired before being let go again just last night.
This move has raised eyebrows among those familiar with the group, who had previously been terminated by the Trump administration’s mass firings only to be reinstated later. The fate of these workers remains uncertain as they navigate a second round of layoffs in a month.
