A group of senior volunteers in Omaha, known as the “Grandma Posse,” is taking it upon themselves to ensure every Bitcoin ATM in the city has a required scam warning sticker. The initiative aims to protect older adults from being targeted by scammers who use these machines to drain their money.
According to Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson, seniors are losing significant amounts of money due to scams involving Bitcoin ATMs. One victim lost $500,000 over a 30-day period. To combat this issue, the sheriff has recruited volunteers to check for the scam warning sticker and educate store managers on how to handle the situation.
The “Grandma Posse” is equipped with yellow vests and whistles in case of emergencies. They visit businesses and find that some Bitcoin machines already have the required stickers. The group emphasizes the importance of these warnings, stating they save other seniors from falling victim to scams.
Omaha City Councilwoman Aimee Melton supports the initiative, saying it’s a way for community members to help combat scams. Failure to display the scam warning sticker can result in fines of $500 for non-compliant businesses.
