The 2023 Grammy weekend kicked off with a celebration honoring the Grateful Dead. The legendary jam band was recognized for its musical achievements and philanthropic efforts as MusiCares Persons of the Year on Friday night at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Hosted by Devoted Deadhead Andy Cohen, the ceremony featured performances by various artists and tributes to the band’s iconic members, including guitarist Bob Weir and drummer Mickey Hart. The event also highlighted the dedication of the Grateful Dead’s fans, known as “Deadheads,” who have kept the music alive for 60 years.
Weir and Hart paid tribute to their late family members, including Bill Kreutzmann’s father, who passed away recently, and Jerry Garcia’s father, who died in 1995. The ceremony also featured performances by actor Woody Harrelson, who shared stories of his adventures with the band, and Wynonna Judd, who sang about her admiration for Robert Weir.
The MusiCares gala raised $9.3 million for programs and services supporting musicians in need, with an emphasis on helping those affected by recent wildfires in Los Angeles. The event marked the 35th anniversary of the dinner and auction, which has become a significant fundraiser for music-related causes.
