The MusiCares Persons of the Year benefit gala will proceed with its tribute to the Grateful Dead on January 31, despite a tumultuous year in the music world. The event is expected to feature an impressive lineup of performers, including Dead & Company, John Mayer, Mick Fleetwood, and Norah Jones.
The tribute comes at a poignant time, following the loss of bassist Phil Lesh in October, just months after Jerry Garcia’s 35th anniversary since his passing in August. The event will also highlight MusiCares’ support for the music community in response to devastating wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles-area neighborhoods.
Previous honorees include Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Dolly Parton, among others. The gala is part of a series of official pre-Grammy Awards functions taking place in Los Angeles ahead of February 2’s Grammy ceremony.
MusiCares Persons of the Year past have been honored for their contributions to music, with Bruce Hornsby expected to perform, alongside Andy Cohen, who will MC the evening. The event aims to bring together the Grateful Dead community and provide financial support to those affected by the wildfires through MusiCares’ Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort.
