Great Blue Hole Reveals Alarming Rise in Tropical Cyclones

The Great Blue Hole off the coast of Belize has revealed a disturbing trend: an alarming increase in tropical cyclones over the past two decades. According to a recent study led by Dominik Schmitt, scientists analyzed sediment cores from the depths of the hole and found evidence that tropical cyclone frequency had risen significantly since 2000.

The study, published by Live Science, shows that regional storm frequency has increased continuously since 5,700 years before present. However, the most significant increase was observed in the last two decades, with nine storms landing in the study area compared to an average of four to six per century over the past 6,000 years.

The researchers attribute this rise to global sea temperature increases due to climate change. The data suggests that humans’ impact on the planet has severe consequences, including more destructive tropical cyclones.
