Greece hit by magnitude 5.2 earthquake in Aegean islands

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck the Greek Aegean islands on Sunday, marking the latest episode of an ongoing earthquake swarm between Santorini and Amorgos. The quake, recorded 17 miles west-southwest of Amorgos, was followed by several more quakes of magnitude 4 or greater off the coast of Santorini’s capital, Fira.

Since February 1, scientists have been monitoring a series of earthquakes on the islands, with thousands reported between magnitudes 3 and 5. Residents have been warned to avoid large buildings and empty swimming pools, while schools were closed throughout the week.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Santorini over the weekend, where a mobile operations center is set up to respond to the ongoing seismic activity. Last week, over 6,000 residents were evacuated from the island amid the shaking. The earthquake swarm has prompted concerns among scientists and officials, with the Greek Civil Protection agency closely monitoring the situation.
