Greece Hit by Series of Earthquakes in Santorini

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near Santorini, Greece, on Tuesday, prompting hundreds to flee the island as a precautionary measure. The quake occurred just after 3 p.m. local time and was followed by a smaller 4.7-magnitude temblor off the coast.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the latest earthquake was 6.2 miles deep. No injuries were immediately reported, but multiple reports indicate that people are leaving the island due to ongoing seismic activity.

Photos show people waiting in line and boarding ferries to Piraeus as safety measures are taken. Some residents have decided to stay on the island, citing no need to leave. However, many others, including a 38-year-old local who stated they will flee “because I am afraid” for their children’s safety.

Over the past few days, hundreds of tremors have been registered in the Aegean Sea between Santorini and Amorgos, prompting authorities to close schools on the islands. Online USGS data lists a dozen other earthquakes that occurred in the region since Monday, with quake magnitudes ranging from 4.0 to 5.3.
