Greece Hit by Series of Quakes in Santorini Region

A series of earthquakes has struck the Greek island of Santorini and surrounding islands, with three more quakes reported near the island on Monday morning. The moderate 5.0 magnitude quake followed three smaller ones on Sunday evening, raising concerns among residents about a potential major earthquake.

The region has been experiencing seismic activity for two weeks, with experts warning that a major earthquake is possible. A state of emergency remains in place until at least March 3, and inspections have found no damage to buildings.

Despite the increased risk, there have been no reported injuries or significant damage. Over 11,000 people have left the islands due to the earthquakes, which have numbered over 11,000 since January 26.

Schools on Santorini, Amorgos, and other nearby islands will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday. A team of experts is en route from Patras with a specialized earthquake rescue vehicle to assist in the response effort.

Seismologist Kostas Papazachos has warned that the situation could continue for most or all of February, but hopes for a gradual de-escalation of seismic activity soon.
