Greece on High Alert as Santorini Experiences Multiple Earthquakes

Greece is on high alert after multiple earthquakes shook the island of Santorini, prompting authorities to shut down schools and dispatch rescue teams with sniffer dogs. The strongest earthquake recorded was a magnitude 4.6 at 3:55 p.m. Sunday, with dozens of other tremors reported since early Friday.

Despite initial concerns about potential damage from nearby volcano activity, experts say the earthquakes are not related to the Santorini volcano. However, locals remain on edge due to the possibility of another strong quake. Authorities have advised residents to drain their swimming pools and avoid large open-air events.

The Greek government has taken precautionary measures, dispatching rescuers with sniffer dogs to search for potential casualties and pitching tents in open fields as a safety net. Experts estimate that the area could potentially produce a 6-magnitude quake, although predicting such an event is impossible.

Mild earthquakes have also been recorded in Santorini’s volcano caldera since September, but seismic activity has subsided since January. The island of Santorini was devastated by a massive eruption around 1600 B.C., which caused widespread destruction and flooding that impacted nearby islands and countries as far away as Egypt.
