Greece is set to spend 25 billion euros ($27 billion) over the next decade to upgrade its military capabilities, with a focus on high-tech warfare technologies. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias announced the plan in parliament, stating that it aims to address tensions with neighboring Turkey and modernize Greece’s defense strategy.
The overhaul will shift from traditional systems to networked strategies centered on mobile missile systems, drone technologies, and advanced command units. The plan also includes new soldier gear equipped with sensors and communication systems, as well as dedicated satellite capabilities for secure communications during conflict.
Greece is part of a broader trend of European countries increasing military spending in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The move comes as the US considers reducing its commitment to European defense. Greece’s modernization drive has already involved cooperation with France, Israel, and the US, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has dismissed calls to abandon plans to buy F-35 fighter jets in favor of a European alternative.
