Wildfires on the Greek island of Crete have been extinguished after a forceful evacuation of 5,000 people. The blaze did not cause any casualties but left forest trees and olive trees burned.
In mainland Greece, a fire near Athens was brought under control on Thursday evening, forcing the evacuation of 300 people. Strong winds remained in the area, prompting firefighters to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, Turkiye has experienced devastating wildfires, claiming two lives. A local forestry worker died trying to contain a fire near Odemis, while an 81-year-old resident succumbed to smoke inhalation. The fires have damaged or destroyed about 200 homes.
The blazes in both Greece and Turkiye are attributed to hot, dry weather and strong winds. Experts warn that climate change is intensifying conditions, making devastating summer wildfires common in the region.
