Greek Islands Experience Seismic Swarm Causing Quakes Up To Magnitude 5

A seismic swarm has struck the Greek islands, causing hundreds of earthquakes on the Aegean Sea. The phenomenon may last for several days or weeks before diminishing, according to Santorini Mayor Nikos Zorzos. Thousands of residents and seasonal workers have left the Cycladic Islands due to quakes up to magnitude 5 recorded since Friday. Ferry and commercial flight operators have added services to accommodate departures.

Residents are advised to remain cautious, with some describing the situation as “different this time” due to frequent earthquakes every two to three minutes. However, authorities assure that there is no connection between the swarm and Santorini’s dormant volcanoes.

While tourism has been impacted, hardy tourists have enjoyed having stunning views to themselves on deserted streets in Fira. The mayor has canceled public events and restricted travel to the island, but construction work has been banned in certain areas.

Efthimios Lekkas, head of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, notes that the epicenter of the earthquakes is moving northward away from Santorini. No injuries have been reported, and authorities are urging residents to stay informed about the situation.
