Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has firmly rejected the United States’ claims to take control of the island territory. In a Facebook post on Sunday, Nielsen stated that “The United States will not get it. We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future.”
Nielsen’s comments come after US President Donald Trump told NBC News that military force could be used to acquire Greenland, and even suggested doing so without using military power. However, in a similar interview, Trump also stated “I don’t take anything off the table,” leaving room for other options.
Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States, with a population that has expressed strong opposition to the US’s annexation plans. Danish leaders have also pushed back against Trump’s comments. The situation highlights tensions between Greenland and the US over territorial control and national security concerns.
