Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has strongly rejected the United States’ claim to take control of the island, citing Denmark’s sovereignty. In a Facebook post on Sunday, Nielsen stated that the US would not acquire the Arctic country and emphasized Greenland’s right to self-determination.
The statement comes after US President Donald Trump expressed interest in annexing the semi-autonomous Danish territory during a recent visit to a US military base in northern Greenland. However, Vice President JD Vance had previously suggested that the US might better protect the strategically located island due to Denmark’s handling of security concerns.
Nielsen’s firm response has confirmed Greenland’s commitment to maintaining its independence and resisting any external influence. The prime minister’s words reflect the island nation’s long-standing desire for autonomy and self-governance.
