Greenland is set to establish its own terms for defence and mining ties with the United States, according to Prime Minister Mute Egede. This comes after renewed interest from President-elect Donald Trump in acquiring the Arctic island, which is a semi-autonomous Danish territory.
Egede stated that his government is willing to cooperate with the US on its own conditions, emphasizing the importance of Greenland’s independence and sovereignty. He has summoned party leaders for a meeting to discuss a collective approach to the US interest, aiming to present a united front in negotiations.
US Vice President-elect JD Vance had previously dismissed the idea of using military force to gain control of Greenland, instead highlighting the strategic value of the island and its rich resources. The Danish government is also closely monitoring the situation, as Greenland’s independence has significant implications for Denmark’s foreign policy interests.
