Greenland’s Prime Minister MĂște Egede has stated that he is “ready to talk” with President-elect Donald Trump, following the president-elect’s repeated calls to acquire the island. At a press conference in Copenhagen on Friday, Egede said he had not been in touch with Trump, but expressed willingness to engage in discussions.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also attended the conference and revealed that she had asked for a meeting with Trump. However, Greenland’s autonomy is protected by Denmark’s constitution, and Egede reiterated that “Greenland is for the Greenlandic people.”
Trump had previously floated the idea of buying Greenland during his first term, but has since increased his enthusiasm for acquisition in recent posts on Truth Social. His son, Donald Trump Jr., visited the island earlier this week to explore its natural beauty.
In a news conference, Trump was asked if he could assure the world that he would not use military or economic coercion to seize control of Greenland or the Panama Canal. He replied that he “can’t” make such assurances but emphasized the need for Greenland as part of the US economy for security purposes.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Egede has previously stated his opposition to sale, saying “Greenland is ours” and expressing a commitment to preserving freedom.
