Gregg Popovich Steps Down as Spurs Coach

Basketball Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has announced his decision to step down as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, transitioning to a full-time role as the team’s president of basketball operations. Mitch Johnson, who served as acting head coach after Popovich suffered a mild stroke in November, will take over the permanent position.

Popovich, 76, cited his love for the game remaining strong but acknowledged that he could no longer handle the taxing grind of being an NBA head coach. Despite his health recovery, he expressed gratitude to the players, coaches, and staff who supported him throughout his tenure. The Spurs maintain continuity with Johnson, a decade-long assistant in the organization.

Johnson’s hiring marks a significant move by Popovich, who built a dynasty era during his 22-year tenure, guiding the team to five NBA championships. He is credited as a pillar of the franchise, partnering with iconic players like Tim Duncan and David Robinson. The move comes after Popovich seemed poised to again have a superstar player under his tutelage with the Spurs’ selection of Victor Wembanyama in the 2023 draft.

Former assistant Becky Hammon praised Popovich for the impact he had on her coaching career, citing his exceptional leadership style. With Popovich stepping down, Erik Spoelstra becomes the longest-tenured active NBA head coach.
