Gregg Popovich’s coaching career with the San Antonio Spurs came to an abrupt end when he suffered a stroke in November. The team’s success had seemed assured, thanks to the acquisition of French phenom Victor Wembanyama in the 2023 NBA Draft.
However, now 75 years old, Popovich has decided it’s time to step away as head coach. Despite this, he will remain involved with the organization as its president of basketball operations.
Acting head coach Mitch Johnson takes over permanently, leading a young and promising team that still faces uncertainty due to Wembanyama’s season-ending blood clot in February. The Spurs’ future is now uncertain under Johnson’s leadership.
