A grenade was thrown into a bar in the Olympic Village neighborhood of Grenoble, France, injuring over 10 people, several of whom are seriously wounded. The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Grenoble Mayor Eric Piolle condemned the attack as “unprecedented violence” and thanked emergency responders for their rapid intervention. Isere Prefect Catherine Seguin said some victims were in serious condition.
Deputy Prosecutor François Touret-de-Courcy described the incident as an “act of extreme violence” that may be linked to a settling of scores, but investigators do not believe it’s related to terrorism. They are looking into possible links to drug trafficking and have found a suspect who was in possession of an assault rifle, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
French Health Minister Yannick Neuder and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau have both condemned the attack and plan to visit victims at Grenoble University Hospital on Thursday and Friday respectively.
