Climate campaigner Greta Thunberg has set sail from Sicily on a ship aimed at breaking Israel’s siege of Gaza, joining 12 other activists on a mission to bring aid and raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition’s vessel, Madleen, departed on Sunday with a crew that includes actor Liam Cunningham and European parliamentarian Rima Hassan.
Thunberg, who has become an international voice for climate action, said she is doing so because “we have to keep trying” despite the odds. She criticized Israel’s blockade of Gaza, calling it a “genocide” and accusing the world of “silence.” The activists plan to reach Gaza in seven days, with experts warning that the territory is at risk of famine if aid is not delivered.
The mission is part of a broader strategy by the activist group, which includes a land-based initiative that aims to break Israel’s blockade. Thunberg had previously attempted to board a Freedom Flotilla ship last month, but it was forced to turn back after being attacked by drones in international waters off Malta. The attack damaged the vessel and is attributed to Israel.
The Global March to Gaza, an international initiative also participating in the mission, plans to stage a protest at the Rafah crossing in mid-June. Organizers demand that Israel stop its offensive and reopen the border.
