Climate activist Greta Thunberg has joined an aid ship sailing to Gaza, along with 11 other activists, in a mission aimed at “breaking Israel’s siege” of the devastated territory. The “Madleen”, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, set sail from Sicily on Sunday and aims to deliver life-saving aid, including baby formula and medical supplies.
Thunberg, known for her impassioned climate activism, was joined by actor Liam Cunningham and Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament. The ship’s departure marks an attempt to raise international awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The trip comes amid controversy over Israel’s blockade of Gaza, which has left millions without access to basic necessities. Experts warn that Gaza is at risk of famine if more aid is not brought in. The Israeli government claims the blockade is aimed at pressuring Hamas to release hostages, but critics accuse Israel of genocidal acts.
The crew hopes their mission will be a peaceful and unarmed protest, sailing entirely through international waters into Palestinian waters off Gaza. They face potential risks, including attacks from alleged drones or interference from Israeli forces.
Thunberg expressed her determination to continue the fight for humanity, saying “the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity.” The trip marks an attempt to break the siege of Gaza by sea, as part of a broader strategy to mobilize international support.
