Mornings are tough for Kate Garretson (Julianne Moore) nine months after her partner’s death. The horse rancher struggles to maintain her routine, plagued by sadness that the camera lingers on throughout the film. Her grief has taken a toll on her life, from teaching riding lessons to affording basic expenses.
Kate’s world is further complicated when her daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney), a substance-dependent young adult, shows up asking for money. Kate knows she must refuse, but a part of her can’t bring herself to turn her daughter away. The tension between them leads to a ferocious fight that leaves Kate shaken.
The conflict escalates when Claire returns with a body wrapped in plastic, claiming it’s from her boyfriend Ryan’s latest fight with their dealer Jackie (Domhnall Gleeson). Kate leaps into action, disposing of the corpse and reviewing a fabricated story with Claire. As she investigates what happened to Ryan, Kate becomes entangled in a conspiracy that goes beyond her wildest imagination.
With the help of her close friend Leslie (Fiona Shaw), Kate navigates the complexities of grief and family dynamics. While the film takes some surprising turns, Pearce’s direction keeps the viewer engaged. The movie delivers on its promise, exploring themes of maternal devotion and the devastating consequences of desperation.
