Memphis starting guard Jaylen Wells broke his right wrist on a hard fall while playing in Tuesday’s game against Charlotte. The rookie, who has been a key contributor to the team all season, was taken to the hospital after eight minutes of evaluation and will likely end his season before the Grizzlies’ playoff push.
Wells suffered the injury during a fast-break dunk attempt when he lost his balance in mid-air and landed awkwardly on his side. The collision caused him to slam his head against the court, resulting in significant pain and discomfort.
Teammates Ja Morant and Jalen Simpson expressed concern for Wells’ well-being after the incident. “It’s tough,” said Morant. “We’ve just got to stay with him and keep praying for him.” Simpson was also visibly distraught during the game and was later ejected from play for a Flagrant 2 foul, which is an automatic ejection.
Wells has been a bright spot for the Grizzlies this season, starting 74 of 79 games and averaging 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. His injury will undoubtedly be a setback for the team, but his toughness and resilience have already made an impression on his teammates.
The Grizzlies’ playoff push is uncertain without Wells in the lineup, but they are confident that their next man up can step in and perform well. With the win, Memphis moved into a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference, but could still drop as low as eighth.
