Grizzlies Rookie Jaylen Wells Sidelined After Flagrant Foul Injury

Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday after suffering a broken wrist in a flagrant foul during a dunk attempt against the Charlotte Hornets. Wells, 39th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, broke his wrist when KJ Simpson crashed into his legs and left him landing horizontally.

Wells’ injury occurred in the second quarter of Tuesday’s game, with trainers attending to him after he remained motionless on the floor. Simpson was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected from the game. Despite being seriously injured, Wells showed control over his extremities as he was wheeled off the court.

A hospital X-ray and CT scan revealed that Wells broke his wrist. His father Fred reported that Jaylen is “awake and alert” with a swollen wrist and pain in his face, jaw, and back.

Wells’ injury will force him to miss an extended period, which could impact the Grizzlies’ playoff chances. The team had previously touted Wells as one of the promising rookies in the 2024-25 class, with some observers even considering him for Rookie of the Year honors.
